Coronado's Mission Statement
We are Striving for Aussie Excellence.
We breed Australian Shepherds that have the temperament to please their owners, along with the bidability that makes them easier to work with, the athletic ability to be able to excel in any competitive venue, yet also the intelligence that makes these fine dogs able to think and respond to your commands quickly and efficiently. They are able to problem solve which is a must when dealing with stock and us "slower" handlers, along with the wonderful ability to forgive us when we screw up their runs, combined with the physical correctness and beautiful colorations which enables them to stand proudly in any conformation class.
We do our very best to keep our lines as clean as possible from any genetic diseases. Our dogs eyes are checked yearly, and the hips and elbows are OFA rated at the proper ages. We do not carry any of the lines that are known to produce autoimmune diseases, epilepsy, eye diseases or hip displacia. None of our dogs are rated less than OFA Good, Elbows are Normal. We will not breed to a dog with a lesser rating than that as well. Eyes have to be checked and cleared yearly by a veterinarian ophthalmologist. We are very picky as to what lines we do breed too, so as not to incorporate so many of the genetic disorders that are becoming so common in this breed. We do our best to insure our dogs are as healthy and sound as possible and will bring as many years of joy to their owners as possible.
Here at Coronado's Australian Shepherds we do not keep control of your puppy once you obtain it. Our contract strictly states that you are the buyer of the said puppy. We believe when you buy a puppy, it should be yours and not co-owned with numerous rules and stipulations to follow in order to keep that contract validated. We are here to help you 24/7 if you want our help in any aspect. If you decide you want to show that puppy/dog in conformation, agility, herding, tracking, obedience or whatever, we will be glad to back you and lend any advice or help that we can, but it is strictly your decision. If you decide later in life you want to breed that dog and you have accomplished the required OFA ratings, and yearly eye check ups on our contract, and clearly understand the commitment of work involved, and the expense of raising a litter, which entails finding them suitable homes but also being willing to keep those that may not get homes, then we will be glad to assist in finding a suitable mate for your dog which will be of good clean Aussie lineage as well.
Aussies are not for everyone. They are a herding breed dog, that is bred to have extensive energy and intelligence. That being said, even though they are some fantastic couch potatoes later in life, they do require plenty of exercise and brain stimulation. Walking is not exercise for an Aussie, it needs running, playing, rough housing and discipline. As with any child (fur or skin) they all need discipline. Rewards for good behavior and definite negative responses for unacceptable behavior. If you do not discipline these dogs when needed, they will run your household. After all they figure someone has to be the top dog, if you are not going to take the roll, they may as well. Aussies can be reserved with strangers, and may not make up to friends and family that come to your home or that you might meet in public. Socialization early on is a must for a dog that is to be good with people.
Aussies are very protective over their family members and their possessions. It is their nature as a herding dog to be protective. So you must be prepared and in tune to your dogs evaluation of those that are near your property, vehicle, and family members, just in case they don't feel the person in question is trustworthy. I seriously take into consideration my dog's evaluation of people, its usually better than mine.
I don't think there is any breed of dog that is as loyal and faithful to their people, not to mention as just plain fun to have around, as the Aussie.
So very many of our puppies have gone to homes that had no inclination to show these dogs, only to be their best friends and loving companions. I have no complaints about that at all. Actually I would rather know that my pups are in wonderful loving homes that will last their lifetime, than just a "Titled Asset" that someone owns. Titles are wonderful and are very hard earned, don't get me wrong. We are very proud of all of our doggie family that do take the time and tremendous efforts to title their dogs. However, in order to purchase a puppy from us, loving homes are mandatory.
If anyone ever tells you money can't buy love, they've obviously never bought an Aussie!

A typical day at the Coronado place...
"So, you wanna see the puppies?
Well, we're the Approval Committee - you got enough dog cookies to buy a visitor's pass?
If not, 'Smiley' here will see you back to the front gate."

"Hey, you dogs better knock it off! Let the nice folks through to see our babies."
("Doh, it's Mom!! Quick, everybody look cute.")
